Iolite

Iolite

Known as the “water sapphire”, Iolite’s deep blue colour is often likened to a Sapphire. However, the blue violet colour that gives Iolite its name comes from the Greek “ios”, meaning violet.  Mined in India, Brazil, Burma and Sri Lanka, Iolite is a variety of the cordierite mineral, Iolite is a pleochroic stone, meaning it absorbs light differently depending on the direction of the rays. Hence, the stone changes colour depending on the direction of light, a particularly desirable quality in a piece of gemstone jewellery.

Iolite is used in chakra healing to stimulate the Third Eye Chakra (Ajna) to bring greater intuition and wisdom.  It is also traditionally given to celebrate a 21st wedding anniversary.
